Digipak advertisements.

These are the advertisements I have made for my digipak. I wanted it to reflect the digipak itself a lot so it they can both be easily recognised as they are similar. To do this I kept the colours the same such as the pink background and pink tint to the photographs. I also kept the same font for the writing that is on the digipak along with the logo that is printed on one of the panels. Because my artist is the main selling point of her music and I really wanted to make that clear throughout the digipak and the advertisement which I have done by making her name the biggest boldest piece of text on the advertisement along with an image of her taking up the majority of the page emphasising her importance over the actual music itself.

I have decided to lay out my advertisement all in a straight line going down the page so it looks more consistent and easy to look at instead of all over the page and confusing. I included things such as a four star rating from Q magazine to make it more realistic as it would help sell the album more. I used Q magazine as it is the best company that targets Indie Pop music from artists such as Florence and the machine and Ellie Goulding who are both similar to mine.

The advertisement I think works the best is the last one. This is because I like the edited logo the best as where I have cropped it down smaller then the others it helps it tie in with the image more. Also I like the image used in the third one more then the others as it is a lot more clear and shows of my artist more as the first two are quite blurry and unclear. I wanted to use the image from the front cover of my digipak for my advertisement but I didn't think it worked well as it didnt have any background to it and I wanted to add in the nature part of it to keep it relating to my digipak. I decided to use a new image that wasn't included on my digipak panels as I think it keeps the audience intrigued as it is something new to look at although it still relates with the digipak.

Developed music video- adding a story line

Here are images from my music video of the boy I decided to include in order to get more of a story line. I have done this as part of my feedback from people was to include more of a story line so it makes more sense and has more meaning to it. I have presented the boy in black and white through out the whole video to emphasise that what has happened between the two is negative and dead in the past. The black and white helps show that she is upset and possibly heart broken, as they are very dull and sad colours possibly reflecting their past.

I have also presented the boy in my video as very mysterious by not showing his face at all. The shots I have included of him are always from the back of his head or I have crossed his face out in the images I used. I didn’t want his face to be shown as again it helps emphasize that her relationship with him is in the past and almost like he isn’t a part of her life anymore.

At one point in the video, flickers of photographs are shown of my artist and the boy together. This helps emphasise that they were in serious relationship and it highlights how happy she was with him which gives the lyrics more meaning, as she is heart broken about him. There is also a quick flash her hand ripping the photos in half, this shows how they are now separated and makes it clear that they are no longer together. Tearing the photos is done in quite a violent way as I sped the footage up so it is done really quickly. This makes it look more dramatic which suits the pace of the song as it builds up at that time.

Feedback from showing my music video.

After getting feed back from the class after showing them my music video so far these are the things they said I should change:

  • add a story line to it so it flows better and makes more sense
  • less clips of the artist lip singing
  • fill in all the small gaps in between clips
  • add another setting other then out doors
In order to improve my music video from this feedback I have decided to add some clips of a boy in it which will be shown as her ex-boyfriend. I want to do this because people said I should have a story line which will be that the artist in my video has been left by the boy. This will also help the song make sense as the lyrics will relate more to the visuals and tell the story of what she is singing about.

Digipak 3rd draft.

This is another edited digipak I have made which is almost complete. All the panels are finished except things such as logos, small print and album title need to be added. Also I need to improve the font for the track list as it is slightly hard to read.
I have changed the backgrounds of two of my images so they are no longer plain pink. I wanted to do this because I think it looked far too childish due to the over the top use of pink. So to still link in with the rest of the digipak I added images from a nature looking scene which I took myself to give it a mature look. I edited the images to give them a pink/red tint like the track list image so the theme is consistent across each panel also to emphasise the indie pop genre and the fact that my artists target audience is females.
What I am going to do next is finish the spines by adding things such as artist name, logo and album name. I also need to add something such as a circle to show where the cd is going to go which is in the middle over the image of my artists mouth.

Beginning of filming music video.

I have started to film the several shots of my music video that involve my artist being in the woods. I chose to do this during the afternoon when it was sunny/sunset. I decided to do this so it tied in with the fact it is a love song from an Indie Pop genre as sunsets connate love. I also wanted it to be sunny so it looked more positive then it being filmed in the night as that would connote a darker genre. I chose to include various close up shots of my artist through out the video. This is because I wanted my artist to seem as if she is really involved with the camera as I think this will help the audience realise her emotions more.
Also because in Andrew Goodwin's analysis of music video he says that "the demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work."  So I wanted to link in with this by adding lots of close ups of my artist as she is the main selling point of her music so being shown a lot is an important element of my music video.

Second edited digipak.

This is another version of my digipak I have made to see which one represents my artist and genre best.
I decided to remove one of the images and add in another logo as I thought it was a bit too much having my artist on each panel. Also I think having her name printed again really big and bold emphasises her importance towards the music especially in comparison to the song titles being printed in quite small font.
I think this digipak reflects the Indie pop genre of my artist well because it is very bright and bold which makes it look upbeat and happy like indie pop music is also it reflects my artists positive and feminine personality due to the bright colours and images. This digipak also relates to my artists target audience (young females) due to the use of a variety shades of pink, the use of feminine images such as love hearts and the curly soft font used. The use of the love hearts and slightly pinks tones I added to the images help emphasise the genre and music itself again as it connotes love which is what most indie pop music is about.

Digipak's similar to mine-Florence and the machine

Starting to put my digipak together I have looked back into some other artists digipaks to see how they have reflected their genre of music and themselves as artist.
I decided to look back on Florence and the machines digipak as she has the same genre of music as I have chosen due to it being her song I have used for my music video.

So far I have had the idea for my digipak that it would be hugely centred around my artist, having all panels filled with images of her. Florence and the machines digipak is also like this as she is shown on almost every panel. I think this is a very important and common style for female artist to have on their albums as their music is usually revolved around their style and looks.
The main aspect I like about Florence and the machines digipak which I want to use on mine is how consistent it is all over. This is through the use of the same brightness and contrast on all images and having them shot in similar environments.

Edited digipak.

This is the most recent digipak I have made since getting feed back from my digipak pitch. The things I have changed that people said need improving are:

  • Added colour: to make it look more pop/indie so it stands out more and comes across as more positive and upbeat instead of just plain images.
  • Removed certain backgrounds from images: to make it look more consistent with adding the same coloured backgrounds to all the images match in some way. I have done this because people said I should think about how all the panels relate.
  • Changed the font: people said I should change the font (which I planned to) so the text looked more feminine and suited the digipak more.

Updated production plan.

This is an updated version of my production plan as I have arranged the dates at which I will be able to do some more filming. I have had to be quite specific with what days I film the shots that are outside because I want the weather to be right so it suits the song and the genre along with the ideas I have planned for my music video.

Feedback sheets from digipak pitch.

Green screen analysis of Rihanna digipak.

Here is a green screen analysis I done on Rihanna's digipak for her album "talk that talk." I decided to analyse this digipak in detail because Rihanna comes from a similar genre as my artist (pop) and certain aspects of her digipak I would like to consider including in mine. These are things such as the consistent theme through out (hers being newspaper style) and the artist being the main image on each panel.

First music video draft.

Projector shots from my video.

From feed back I have previously got from my anamatic, people said that they think I should add another setting/scene to my music video so it isn't all filmed in the same location as that could get boring. I originally has the idea to use projectors and breath to present the lyrics in the air. I still want to have the lyrics in parts of the video because they are a main element if my music video because they have meaning and tell the story of what is occurring.

I am still going to use a projector to present certain lyrics but I am going to do this by projecting them onto walls on and around my artist as she sings.

I decided to project certain lyrics across my artists face as I think it emphasises how what she is singing is effecting her as they are look as if they are taking over her and blocking her.

I also chose not for my artist to lip sing all the lyrics because from feedback people said I shouldn't have her doing this for the whole video.

Instead of having my artists face shown in every shot where I used the projector I decided to use her shadow also. This makes my artist look slightly ghost like which relates to the lyrics (Goodwins analysis "lyrics relate to visuals.") It also emphasises the sad side to the song portraying her as quite a dark dull character showing her heart break and lonely emotions.

Some of the words that I projected are not exact lyrics they are just main words that people would usually pick up from the song because they are repeated a lot though out. I wanted to have flashes of these words at times in my video to highlight the importance of the lyrics and make them have a stronger impact and meaning on the video to make it seem a bit more dramatic.
I used fairy lights to go around my artist on the floor as I think they brought out the love elements of the song. This is because they make the shots seem quite warm and romantic. They also bring out the girly side to my artist as well as the song as they are decorations you would often find in a teenage girls room.

Production plan.

This is the production plan I have made so far to help me plan out when and where I am going to film. The dates I have arranged so far are for the Friday coming to shoot several of my shots in school as they do not need to be in a specific location as they only show my artists mouth/face so the background can be plain.

Developed idea's from anamatic feedback.

As I have decided to add in a different element to my music video due to the feedback I received from
people saying that I should do it isn't as repetitive, I have made a few more story board shots to show where they
will be added and what will be happening. I decided to add in this idea I have taken from the band "Travis" where my artist will be projecting lyrics that she sings into the air by the cold breathe coming out her mouth. I wanted to add this element in multiple times through the whole video
to break it up slightly so it doesn't seem so repetitive and look as if they are all the same shots.

  Another comment I received
from people from my anamatic was I should refer to Goodwin's analysis more such as the notion of looking. I decided I was going to refer to this by having a few shots of my artist being shown looking at herself in the mirror with the camera looking over her shoulder as if  they are not meant to be there watching her.

Again to reflect more of Goodwin's analysis and to break up the shots of the video more I decided to add in more shots of my artist in different settings such as sitting in front of a mirror with candles surrounding her. Again this refers to Goodwin's analysis of the notion of looking and also the comment he made about the
demands of the record label wanting a lot of close up shots of the artist.
I want to have the candles in this shot because I think it helps reflect the love side of the song keeping it soft and romantic in a way again referring to Goodwin's analysis music/lyrics relate to visuals.

Another way to break up my video I have decided to add in shots of drums and tambourine's being hit as the actual music in the video does as they are a clear main sound that occurs through out the song. This relates to Goodwin's analysis of music relating to visuals as you will hear the instruments as you see them being played.

Feedback analysis from anamatic.

Another comment people made on my animatic, which they think I should improve, is to add more of Goodwin’s analysis such as intertextual references and the notion of looking. To include the notion of looking I am going to include shot(s) of my artist looking in the mirror with the camera looking at her from an over the shoulder shot. In my feedback someone mentioned having htis shot including the candles in the mirror also which could create a good effect still reflecting a love element to the video. This shot will also help emphasize the Pop genre to it as it is showing the importance of the artist herself in the video by her looking at herself in the mirror along with being shown constantly throughout.

Development idea's for my music video.

One of the main things from my animatic feedback people said I should include was another setting/ scene in my video as they thought it was a bit repetitive, especially the parts with the candles which they also think I should develop.
I want to add in another scene to my video so it is less repetitive as all the video so far I have planned to be filmed is set in the woods/in a room full of candles. I want to add in another scene that still links in with the song and the rest of the video. I have started looking into a music video by the band Travis called “moving.” In this video they use projectors outside to project images using their breath, as it is cold in their setting.

Link to music video:

I really like this idea and I think if used in the right way could tie in really well with my music video. Instead of projecting images I want to try and project text so it helps emphasize the meaning of the song, as certain lyrics will be shown. I think this ties in well with the rest of the video I have planned, as it is ghost like also due to the fog that the breath creates like other parts of my video. I think this could also connote the love side of the song that the person she is singing about is almost non existent as they are not shown at all through out the video so the fog helps reflect they are sort of a mystery.
