Improvements made to my video.

I have made improvements to my video as people suggested I should do so in order to keep my video more consistent with the theme as well as the story. To do this I have shot the clips of my artist and her boyfriend outside to link in with the rest of the clips.

I decided to keep the clips in black and white in order to keep them consistent with the shots of the photographs. I also think the black and white helps emphasise the sad side of flashing back to clips of her past. I wanted the camera to be slightly shaky when filming these clips so it looks like the camera is not supposed to be there and helps show more that it is in the past and a flash back of their memories together.

To make the two seem more like they were in love and a strong couple I made sure when filming them again that they looked a lot more close with each other by holding hands and having shots of them hugging. This helps emphasise again the sadness of it that she loved him and makes the break up in the song more powerful.

Plans for video improvements.

After showing several people my music video so far they all said I should improve on one thing. This was the party where my artist and her ex boyfriend are shown together..

They thought I should improve this by shooting the footage outside on the streets other then inside school because they believe it doesn't suit the feel of the rest of the video due to it having a very outdoorsy theme to it. I agree on the feedback I have received as I think it looks out of place also. So to improve this I am going to reshoot the footage of the couple but outside to keep it more consistent.

Music video shots.

As well as a large amount of my music video being filmed outside in a nature/wooded area at times clips have been shot inside. I wanted to have the nature theme remain through out to keep it consistent even in the slightest way. I have done this by using the projector again to project images of trees behind and across my artist. This also keeps my video relating to my digipak and advertisement as they also have a clear nature theme to them.
I decided to have the tree as a silhouette across my artist as it contrasts with the clips before and after which have blossomed bright green trees in them and it cuts to this bare, dark tree making the break up of my artist and the boy she is singing about seem more tragic and dramatic.

Editing my music video.

To make my video seem more warm and connote love at certain times I have started to put effects on some of the clips. I have changed the brightness of the clips in order to make them brighter which will make the Indie Pop genre of the music stand out more instead of it seeming quite dull which my genre is the complete opposite of.

Editing my music video.

For my music video I have decided to layer certain clips so you can see one over the other. I have done this at the points in the song where she sings about a "ghost." This helps highlight what she is singing about and relates lyrics to the visuals (Goodwins analysis) as she is portrayed as a ghost like figure the way she fades in and out of the shot.
I also wanted to have multiple clips layered over one another so it helps emphasise a disorientated kind of feel. This is because the song often goes from slow to upbeat fast showing my artists changing emotions and mood towards the person she is singing about and the disorientated look the layered clips gives shows this in a visual way as well as being able to hear it.

Final digipak advertisement.

This is my final digipak advertisement. After getting feedback from the class I have changed a few things such as:

  1. I changed the main image to the same one that is on the front cover of my digipak. This makes the two a lot more consistent with one another meaning people will be able to recognise my artist more. Instead of having the image of my artist cropped out with a pink background I decided to keep the original background so it broke up the pink other wise it would have been too much. Also having a forrest/natural looking element to it also helps keep it matching my digipak as well as my music video because it is revolved mainly around nature.
  2. I have also made the whole image/logo into a polaroid style as this was another piece of feedback I got saying it would look better this way. I liked this idea because I think it ties in well with the Indie Pop genre of my music also highlighting that on the digipak there are a lot of photographs of my artist as she is the most important part of her music.

Final digipak.

This is my final digipak I have put together after doing some more editing from getting some more feedback from people on what they think I need to improve and add. I have decided to add more detail such as small print on the back of the digipak which gives the address of the record company as well as copy right. Also I have added the title of the album and the artists name in the spine to make it look more like an album when it is all folded into shape.

I also included the outlines of small hearts in the spine above and below the text to keep the girly theme consistent aswell as highlighting the artist name "Heart" again to show that she is the most important part of the album over the music. This is clear as the song titles themselves are printed much smaller and a lot less clear then her name and in comparison to the images of the artist.

I wanted to add something extra along with my digipak to make it more interesting and unique so I have included a section where there are postcards slotted into one of the panels of the digipak which is shown with text saying there are postcards of the artist inside.I chose to include images of the artist because again this shows her over all importance towards the success of her music as she is shown as an idol and role model to her fans.
To make the lay out of the digipak more clear I included a cirle cut out on one of the panels to show where the CD itself is going to go. I kept the background around it Pink to keep all the panels consistent as they all include some form as Pink whether it is the background or an added image/the pink tint on the photos themselves.

Feedback on digipak and advertisement.

I decided to show people in my class my digipak and advertisement to get feedback. This is because they are of the in between age group as my target audience (18) so I was able to get feedback from people of the same target audience therefore it will be a lot more helpful.  After showing the class my digipak and advertisement I got some feedback on things I need to change such as..

Advertisement:

  • The photo isn't the right one I should use because it isn't bright enough and doesn't reflect the digipak because it is duller then the images used on it. People think I should use the image on the front cover of my digipak so it has more of a consistent look and they suit better.
  • People made a comment that where I have used a white boarder and the logo has a white boarder, that I should combine it all together so they are the same size to make it look like a Polaroid. I like this idea as I think it will reflect the Indie Pop genre also.
Digipak:
  • Make sure the text on the spines are the right way round.

Possible final Digipak advertisement.

This is possibly my final edited advertisement for my digipak. The things I decided to make some final changes to are adding in an itunes advertisement showing it can be purchased there as well as in stores. I decided to do this as it targets the younger generation of my audience as well as the older ones as most people from the younger generation download music and albums instead of purchasing them so it shows multiple options and choices of purchasing the product whether it is through buying it through a store or of the internet.

I also decided to include a White boarder around the image of my artist to emphasise the image more as she is the main selling point and I want to make that clear throughout the poster, digipak and music video. The White boarder also helps break down the Pink background as I think it looked a bit too child like for the 15-20 year old target audience I have.

Digipak advertisements.

These are the advertisements I have made for my digipak. I wanted it to reflect the digipak itself a lot so it they can both be easily recognised as they are similar. To do this I kept the colours the same such as the pink background and pink tint to the photographs. I also kept the same font for the writing that is on the digipak along with the logo that is printed on one of the panels. Because my artist is the main selling point of her music and I really wanted to make that clear throughout the digipak and the advertisement which I have done by making her name the biggest boldest piece of text on the advertisement along with an image of her taking up the majority of the page emphasising her importance over the actual music itself.

I have decided to lay out my advertisement all in a straight line going down the page so it looks more consistent and easy to look at instead of all over the page and confusing. I included things such as a four star rating from Q magazine to make it more realistic as it would help sell the album more. I used Q magazine as it is the best company that targets Indie Pop music from artists such as Florence and the machine and Ellie Goulding who are both similar to mine.

The advertisement I think works the best is the last one. This is because I like the edited logo the best as where I have cropped it down smaller then the others it helps it tie in with the image more. Also I like the image used in the third one more then the others as it is a lot more clear and shows of my artist more as the first two are quite blurry and unclear. I wanted to use the image from the front cover of my digipak for my advertisement but I didn't think it worked well as it didnt have any background to it and I wanted to add in the nature part of it to keep it relating to my digipak. I decided to use a new image that wasn't included on my digipak panels as I think it keeps the audience intrigued as it is something new to look at although it still relates with the digipak.

Developed music video- adding a story line

Here are images from my music video of the boy I decided to include in order to get more of a story line. I have done this as part of my feedback from people was to include more of a story line so it makes more sense and has more meaning to it. I have presented the boy in black and white through out the whole video to emphasise that what has happened between the two is negative and dead in the past. The black and white helps show that she is upset and possibly heart broken, as they are very dull and sad colours possibly reflecting their past.

I have also presented the boy in my video as very mysterious by not showing his face at all. The shots I have included of him are always from the back of his head or I have crossed his face out in the images I used. I didn’t want his face to be shown as again it helps emphasize that her relationship with him is in the past and almost like he isn’t a part of her life anymore.

At one point in the video, flickers of photographs are shown of my artist and the boy together. This helps emphasise that they were in serious relationship and it highlights how happy she was with him which gives the lyrics more meaning, as she is heart broken about him. There is also a quick flash her hand ripping the photos in half, this shows how they are now separated and makes it clear that they are no longer together. Tearing the photos is done in quite a violent way as I sped the footage up so it is done really quickly. This makes it look more dramatic which suits the pace of the song as it builds up at that time.

Feedback from showing my music video.

After getting feed back from the class after showing them my music video so far these are the things they said I should change:

  • add a story line to it so it flows better and makes more sense
  • less clips of the artist lip singing
  • fill in all the small gaps in between clips
  • add another setting other then out doors
In order to improve my music video from this feedback I have decided to add some clips of a boy in it which will be shown as her ex-boyfriend. I want to do this because people said I should have a story line which will be that the artist in my video has been left by the boy. This will also help the song make sense as the lyrics will relate more to the visuals and tell the story of what she is singing about.

Digipak 3rd draft.

This is another edited digipak I have made which is almost complete. All the panels are finished except things such as logos, small print and album title need to be added. Also I need to improve the font for the track list as it is slightly hard to read.
I have changed the backgrounds of two of my images so they are no longer plain pink. I wanted to do this because I think it looked far too childish due to the over the top use of pink. So to still link in with the rest of the digipak I added images from a nature looking scene which I took myself to give it a mature look. I edited the images to give them a pink/red tint like the track list image so the theme is consistent across each panel also to emphasise the indie pop genre and the fact that my artists target audience is females.
What I am going to do next is finish the spines by adding things such as artist name, logo and album name. I also need to add something such as a circle to show where the cd is going to go which is in the middle over the image of my artists mouth.

Beginning of filming music video.

I have started to film the several shots of my music video that involve my artist being in the woods. I chose to do this during the afternoon when it was sunny/sunset. I decided to do this so it tied in with the fact it is a love song from an Indie Pop genre as sunsets connate love. I also wanted it to be sunny so it looked more positive then it being filmed in the night as that would connote a darker genre. I chose to include various close up shots of my artist through out the video. This is because I wanted my artist to seem as if she is really involved with the camera as I think this will help the audience realise her emotions more.
Also because in Andrew Goodwin's analysis of music video he says that "the demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work."  So I wanted to link in with this by adding lots of close ups of my artist as she is the main selling point of her music so being shown a lot is an important element of my music video.
